Hamilton Aguiar

HAMILTON AGUIAR (BORN 1965, BELO HORIZONTE, BRAZIL)

Aguiar is a visual artist, painter, and sculptor based in the United States. He is known for his contemporary abstract works that merge painting and sculpture, often exploring the interplay between light, texture, and form through layered metallic surfaces and resin finishes. His work spans paintings, wall sculptures, and large-scale installations that blur the boundaries between two- and three-dimensional art.

EARLY LIFE AND EDUCATION

Hamilton Aguiar was born in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, in 1965. He developed an early interest in design and craftsmanship, which led him to study and practice decorative arts and restoration.

In 1987, Aguiar moved to the United States, initially settling in the Hamptons, New York. Immersed in the American art scene, he began refining his personal visual language, balancing his Brazilian sensibility with a minimalist aesthetic inspired by light, landscape, and atmosphere.

Aguiar worked on churchs and architectural restoration projects, where he mastered the use of gold and silver leaf — a technique that would later become a signature feature of his fine art practice.

CAREER

Aguiar began exhibiting professionally in the late 2004, gaining recognition for his unique use of metal leaf and resin, which gives his works a reflective, luminous quality. His early series were inspired by the winter landscapes of upstate New York — snowfields, tree shadows, and stark contrasts of light and dark — rendered in simplified compositions that emphasize rhythm and space.

After moving to Miami in 2013, Aguiar’s work evolved to include brighter tones, architectural compositions, and organic forms inspired by nature and light. He expanded into three-dimensional wall sculptures, merging painting, relief, and design. These pieces often feature smooth contours, metallic or lacquered finishes, and shallow reliefs that interact dynamically with surrounding light.

His notable bodies of work include:

  • Landscapes Series – minimalist interpretations of winter and light in nature
  • Opticals Series – geometric abstractions exploring perception and symmetry
  • Flowers Series – sculptural wall pieces based on organic floral forms, combining metal, resin, and wood
  • Solitude Series – meditative, atmospheric compositions reflecting stillness and reflection
  • Seascapes Series - captures the meditative movement of water and light through minimalist compositions, where layered metallic surfaces and subtle tonal shifts evoke the horizon’s quiet balance between reflection and depth

Aguiar’s artworks have been exhibited widely in galleries and art fairs across North and South America, including Art Miami, Hamptons Fine Art Fair, and Art Palm Beach. His works are represented by several galleries in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Europe, Australia and South Korea.

ARTISTIC STYLE AND TECHNIQUE

Aguiar’s practice merges painting, design, and sculpture. He often works on wood panels coated with metal leaf — silver, gold, or copper — and layers them with oils, resin and pigment.        This process creates a luminous, mirror-like surface that changes with light and perspective.
In his sculptural works, Aguiar extends these techniques to three-dimensional forms, maintaining minimalist precision while evoking organic flow. The surfaces are polished, refined, and sensual, emphasizing material beauty and simplicity.

The artist describes his work as a meditation on balance, silence, and transformation, with compositions that invite reflection and spatial awareness.

COLLECTIONS

Aguiar’s works are included in numerous private and public collections in North America, South America, and Asia. His paintings and sculptures are held by collectors in the United States, Brazil, Canada, and South Korea, and have been featured in corporate and hospitality environments.
One of his works is included in the collection of the Museum of Latin American Art (MOLAA) in Long Beach, California.
